The history of the hotel

The history of Skytterhuset dates back to the early 1930`s when it was a club house for Hammerfest shooting club which was one of the biggest in northern Norway. The whole thing was destroyed during the second world war. Crown Prince Olav visited Skytterhuset in 1935 when a shooting contest for the whole country was arranged here.

After the second world war the first part of the building was constructed in 1952, again as a club house for the local shooting club. Therefore its name Skytterhuset.(Skytter = shooting).

In the mid 1960`s Skytterhuset was bought up by the booming fish factory Nestle Findus. They extended the building for housing for employees at the factory. Most of them were finish girls as they were considered the most efficient workers. Several of these girls found their future husbands in Hammerfest and settled down here.

Skytterhuset was bought up by a local family business in 1990 and was being renovated into a hotel. Many of the rooms were renovated as late as 2008 and it is still an active hotel which is open all year.
